World Press Photo is to celebrate their 50th anniversary with a new website that focuses on great photography, smooth user experience, and consistency with other media. The purpose of the new site is to maximize photographic clarity and site usability to communicate World Press Photo's purpose, message and activities as well as inspire photojournalists, educate users and attract sponsors.

The site will launch in January 2005.

De door de NVF opgezette website www.defotojournalist.nl, "dé journalistieke foto- en fotografiedatabase van Nederland", is sinds vandaag voor iedereen toegankelijk.

Foto's plaatsen op deze site is alleen mogelijk voor zelfstandig gevestigde fotografen die lid zijn van de NVJ/NVF.

Als eerste in een reeks van twaalf fotoreportages presenteert Pixelpress ‘Notes of a Former Peacekeeper’ van Johan Rydeng Spanner.

Spanner diende een jaar als vredeshandhaver in het Deense leger in voormalig Joegoslavië, voordat hij fotojournalist werd. (Geen uitzonderlijke carriéremove: Reuters-fotograaf Damir Sagolj diende als vrijwilliger in het Bosnische leger, voordat hij de camera professioneel ter hand nam.) Spanner was ook één van de fotojournalisten die kort voor de Irak-oorlog in Baghdad ontvoerd werden door de Iraakse geheime dienst, vermoedelijk omdat hun accreditaties en visa niet in orde waren.

In zijn woonplaats Den Haag is gisteren plotseling de sportfotograaf Robert Collette overleden. Collette was sinds 1967 actief voor Voetbal International; eerst als freelancer, daarna als fotograaf in vaste dienst.

In zijn bijna veertig jaar durende carrière bezocht hij talloze voetbalwedstrijden in binnen- en buitenland. Dat leverde dikwijls bekroonde fotografie op.

Collette won in 1979 en 1982 de prijs voor beste sportfoto van het jaar. In 1982 leverden zijn inzendingen hem zelfs de eerste, tweede en derde plaats op.

Voor VI fotografeerde hij tijdens het EK 2004 in Portugal. Dat evenement was voor hem het laatste in een lange reeks van grote toernooien, waarop hij in de loop der jaren alle wereldsterren voor zijn camera kreeg.

Robert Collette is 63 jaar geworden.

Deze week besteedt het VRT-programma TerZake (Canvas) aandacht aan de Vlaamse fotograaf Herman Horsten, die dagelijks een foto publiceert op zijn website Wereldkeuken. De VRT-cameraploeg volgde hem in universiteitsstad Leuven bij zijn zoektocht naar foto's van opmerkelijke dagelijkse taferelen, die verwantschap vertonen met het werk van Martin Parr.

In de New York Daily News maakt persfotograaf Todd Maisel (ook bestuurslid van de New York Press Photographers Association) nog eens haarfijn duidelijk waarom een verbod op fotograferen in de ondergrondse van New York nergens op slaat.

Politici als Femke Halsema (beste 10) roepen gemengde reacties op. De complimenten van aanhangers vliegen haar om de oren: intelligent en integer, duidelijk en helder, direct en eerlijk, spontaan en scherp.

Nou ja, er was tenminste één deelnemer aan deze verkiezing die dat letterlijk zo vond. ;-)

Prins Willem-Alexander opent 26 januari in het Verzetsmuseum in Amsterdam een tentoonstelling met foto's die prins Bernhard in de Tweede Wereldoorlog maakte. De platen zijn afkomstig uit het archief van de deze maand overleden prins.

Willem-Alexander zal het eerste exemplaar van het fotoboek over het archief in ontvangst nemen. De expositie is van 27 januari tot en met 17 april te zien.

Er zijn onder meer beelden te zien van het vertrek van het gezin van de prins naar Engeland, na de Duitse inval op 10 mei 1940. Verder is er materiaal over ontmoetingen met politieke en militaire wereldleiders en leden van andere koninklijke families.

De Amerikaanse schrijfster Susan Sontag is dinsdag op 71-jarige leeftijd in New York overleden aan leukemie.

Sontag gold als een van de meest vooraanstaande intellectuelen van de Verenigde Staten. Ze schreef zeventien boeken, waaronder enkele standaardwerken over fotografie: "On Photography" en "Regarding the Pain of Others".

Czech supermodel Petra Nemcova, who appeared on the cover of 2003 Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue, was injured and her photographer boyfriend is missing after the pair were caught up in the Asian tsunami disaster, a spokeswoman for the boyfriend said Tuesday.

Nemcova and British photographer Simon Atlee had been vacationing in the resort of Phuket when the waves swept over them on Sunday, said Atlee's agent, Eve Stoner. "She is in hospital and he is missing. We don't have any further information than that at the moment," Stoner said.

The Sun newspaper reported Tuesday that Nemcova clung to a tree for eight hours as the water swirled around her. It said she suffered a shattered hip and internal injuries.

Nemcova, 25, has appeared in magazines including Sports Illustrated, Marie Claire and Vogue, and also has modeled for Victoria's Secret. Atlee, 33, is a well-known fashion photographer who recently shot the pictures for Nemcova's 2005 calendar.

Ik was erbij toen hij Iggy Pop naakt in Central Park fotografeerde, Neil Young in Los Angeles en James Last in Florida. Die laatste foto was bestemd voor de cover van zijn nieuwste album. Dat zijn natuurlijk leuke tripjes, nog betaald ook, en ik mag met mijn held samenwerken. Ik vul zijn Hasselblad-cassettes met film, reik de lenzen aan. Hij zegt dan altijd 'dankjewel'. Dat hoeft hij niet, maar het is gewoon een aardige en inspirerende man. Ik heb ook veel van 'm geleerd. In Amerika is vaak het motto: hoe groter het circus om de fotograaf heen, make-up artiesten, stylisten, hoe beter de foto. Corbijn bewijst dat dat allemaal niet nodig is.

Nederland heeft dan zijn 3FM-diskjockeys, het World Food Programme van de Verenigde Naties zet fotojournalist James Nachtwey in om geld bijeen te brengen voor Darfur. (En daarvoor hoeft hij niet eens demonstratief 5 dagen te vasten want hij leeft al als een monnik...)

Four photographers have been shortlisted for the £30,000 Deutsche Börse Photography Prize 2005, a major international photography prize. The exhibition will be from 8 April – 5 June 2005 at the Gallery and the award ceremony will take place on 11 May 2005. In its inaugural year, the Deutsche Börse Photography Prize continues The Photographers’ Gallery’s commitment to showcasing new talent and highlighting the best of international photography practice. With generous support from the new sponsors, Deutsche Börse, the Prize continues as one of the most prominent exhibitions at The Photographers’ Gallery as well as being placed amongst the most prestigious international awards.

The four shortlisted photographers are as follows: Luc Delahaye (b.1962, France) was selected for the exhibition Luc Delahaye-Photographs (5 February-3 May 2004) at the National Museum of Photography, Film & Television, Bradford. Delahaye’s work includes a series of monumentally sized panoramas that evoke the traditions of history painting and also the compositions of mid-19th century war photography. Delahaye’s approach to representing the sites and aftermath of contemporary wars and civil unrest consciously determines an alternative to the conventions of photojournalism.

J H Engström(b.1969, Sweden) JH Engström has been selected for the publication Trying to Dance (Journal, 2004). The book confidently and imaginatively blends portraits of friends, interiors and evocative landscapes. Engström builds his pictorial momentum through mixing lyrical colour imagery with graphic, distressed, black and white photography. Trying to Dance powerfully conveys the sense of his emotive and subjective experiences of the people and places around him.

Jörg Sasse (b. 1962, Germany) Rather than ‘taking’ photographs, Jörg Sasse, ‘finds’ them. The departure point for his enigmatic works are anonymous snapshots, through which he sorts in their thousands. Sasse then works on the vernacular photographs that he is intuitively drawn to, often focussing in on a small detail within an image. He crops, saturates, blurs and pixelates the photographs he selects, creating new pictures but ones that have strange and yet familiar qualities to them. Sasse was nominated for the exhibition at Galerie Wilma Tolksdorf, Frankfurt, Germany (3 September–3 November 2004).

Stephen Shore (b. 1947, USA) was selected for his publication Uncommon Places: The Complete Works (Thames & Hudson, 2004). During the 1970s, Shore travelled across the United States, photographing street corners, diners, gas stations and motel rooms of ordinary America –environments that were curious and strangely alien to the New York based Shore. Uncommon Places was first published in 1982 and this year Shore reassessed and increased the scope of the body of work to include previously unseen works. This reflects the influence on the directions of conceptual colour photography that Stephen Shore’s photography continues to hold.

The winner of the Deutsche Börse Photography Prize will be announced on 11 May 2005 and will receive £30,000 and the three runners-up will each receive £3,000. The exhibition will be from 8 April – 5 June 2005 at The Photographers’ Gallery and will afterwards be shown at the Frankfurt Headquarters of Deutsche Börse Group.

Prince Harry, who has gained a reputation the most unruly royal, has got off without charges after his scuffle with a photographer outside a nightclub in October.

The Sunday Express tabloid said that public prosecutors had intended to give him a "criminal caution" but that the decision was overturned through an administrative error. A Crown Prosecution Service spokeswoman quoted by the tabloid said a "breakdown in communication" had led to the error in Harry's case.

Harry's file referred to the fact that he was third in line for the throne -- after his father Prince Charles and elder brother William -- instead of merely mentioning his name, the CPS said. The prince's backers have argued the 20-year-old merely pushed a camera away after it struck him in the face as he got into a car outside a fashionable London nightclub on October 21. The photographer Chris Uncle has argued that the royal "lunged" at him instead.

The CPS spokeswoman, while admitting that Harry's file had accidentally mentioned his status as a royal, said his case had been "reviewed according to the code in a similar way to any other". A criminal record could have kept Harry from enrolling in the elite Sandhurst military academy, as he plans to do in May.

The world's most powerful earthquake in 40 years triggered massive tidal waves that slammed into villages and seaside resorts across Asia on Sunday, killing an estimated 3,000 people in five countries. Tourists, fishermen, homes and cars were swept away by walls of water up to 20 feet high unleashed by the 8.9-magnitude earthquake, centered off the west coast of the Indonesian island of Sumatra.
